The Region of Niagara’s policies and guidelines specify that all spatial (geographic) data be referenced to NAD83 and use a UTM Zone 17 projection. In order to facilitate this requirement, a Horizontal Control Network has been installed within the Region’s geographic boundaries.

This network consists of pairs of inter-visible monuments spaced approximately 5 km apart; the distance between monuments in a pair is between 500 and 1000 metres. Monuments are brass capped and stamped with an 11 digit identification number. The first 3 digits identify the agency, the next 4 are the year the monument was installed and the last 4 are the unique number for that monument. The Region of Niagara has been assigned 109 as the agency identifier.

A total of 282, comprising of 158 new and 124 existing (Federal, Provincial and Municipal), stations were observed using GPS technology in November of 2002. Final adjustments were completed in April 2003. These monuments will be integrated into the Ministry of Natural Resources COSINE database and have geographic (latitude and longitude) and UTM projected co-ordinates referenced to NAD83 adopted. Each monument has an associated sketch describing its position to assist when locating in the field.

The MNR's COSINE database contains Horizontal and Vertical Control information covering the Province of Ontario.

This web site allows users to find monuments within their area of interest and retrieve co-ordinate information along with location sketches. There is no charge for this service, however users are requested to notify the Region of Niagara, Public Works Department at the contact listed below, of any monuments that they are unable to locate or those that have been destroyed or damaged.

Users are also reminded that when retrieving control information, other agency databases (e.g. Federal and Provincial) should be searched to ensure that all pertinent information is obtained.

Please note that these are Horizontal Control monuments and although orthometric heights are shown, these elevations should not be used for vertical control purposes.
